Lewis DURANT

On August 18th, 1956, Constable Durant was on duty in Markham Township. At approximately 2:00 a.m. the officer came across a vehicle parked on the gravel shoulder of Woodbine Avenue. Constable Durant parked his cruiser facing the parked car and investigated the suspicious vehicle. While questioning the driver of the car, Constable Durant was struck and fatally injured by a car travelling southbound.
 
Constable Durant was twenty-two years old at the time of his death and had served with the Markham Township Police Force for only a year.
