SPECIAL OLYMPICS ONTARIO (SOO) has been a popular charity for the YRPA and our members for quite some time now and definitely has a special place in our hearts. Special Olympics promotes opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and develop skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes, and the community.
York Region was fortunate enough to be the host of the Olympics Summer Games in July of 2013 and YRP played an important role in carrying out the games. YRPA was an official partner of the Games and donated $50,000 to assist in making the games a success. YRPA was the official volunteer sponsor, and many of our members donating their time to assist with the success of the event.
The York Regional Police have a strong legacy of hosting the Special Olympics and the YRP and YRPA hope to continue the great legacy started by YRPA member Detective Constable Robert Plunkett who served as the Games Manager in the year 2000.
Tragically, in 2007 Detective Constable Robert Plunkett was killed in the line of duty while attempting to effect an arrest in the Town of Markham. The YRPA members have chosen to honor Rob’s memory, his passion for golf, and the Special Olympics by hosting a Golf Tournament in his name. Since 2007, the Annual Rob Plunkett Memorial Golf Classic has donated all proceeds to Special Olympics Ontario in Rob’s name, as he was so passionate about SOO. To date, a total of just over $85,000 has been donated to Special Olympics Ontario.
